We are continuing our Latinx Month Celebration this week, shining a spotlight on Iris Velazquez. To her, Latinx Month is a time she gets to show others all that Puerto Rico has to offer and how her culture stands out. Q: How long have you worked with All Our Kin? What do you love about the organization? / ¿Cuánto tiempo ha trabajado usted con All Our Kin? ¿Qué le gusta de la organización?
A: Estoy hace más de un año trabajando con All Our Kin y me gusta que tienen los entrenamientos necesarios para nosotras las proveedoras de cuidado infantil.
I have been working with All Our Kin for more than a year and I like that they have the appropriate training for child care providers like us.
Q: Why did you decide to go into Early Childhood Education? / ¿Por qué decidió dedicarse a la Educación para la Primera Infancia?
A: Me dediqué a la Educación temprana cuando mi 3er hijo nació con una condición y nadie quería cuidarmelo. Hay fue cuando decidí abrir mi propio home daycare y yo misma cuidar de mis hijos.
I started working in childhood education when my third child was born with a condition and nobody wanted to take care of him. At that moment, I decided to open my own home daycare and care for my children.
Q: What does Latinx Heritage Month mean to you? / ¿Qué significa el Mes de la Herencia Hispana (Latinx) para usted?
A: Significa mucho ya que podemos demostrar que nuestra cultura resalte y que otras nacionalidades conozcan las cosas buenas que tiene PR.
It means a lot because we can make our culture stand out and allow people from other countries to learn about the great things that PR has to offer.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself! What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Any hobbies? Passions? Anything that would surprise us? / ¡Cuéntenos un poco sobre usted! ¿Qué disfruta hacer en su tiempo libre? ¿Algún pasatiempo? ¿Pasiones? ¿Algo que nos sorprendería?
A: Aparte de ser proveedora tengo un pasatiempo de hornear bizcochos y postres para fiestas que en un futuro me gustaría emprender mi propio negocio en ese ambiente. Y me gusta ayudar a las demás proveedoras en lo que necesiten y poder tener mi propia fundación para ayudar a otros.
In addition to being a provider, I love baking cakes and desserts for parties. In the future, I would like to start my own business in that field. And I love helping other providers with whatever they need and having my own foundation to help others.
