Together, we will learn how children grow social and emotional skills over time. Every child grows at their own pace, and that is okay. This series will help you better understand children’s feelings and behaviors and give you simple tools you can use in your program right away.

What we will learn:

  • Understanding feelings with RULER

    • We will learn about RULER, a tool from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER helps children (and adults!) notice, name, and manage their feelings. We will practice using the Mood Meter and talk about how children experience feelings in different ways

  • Behavior is Communication

    • Children’s behavior always has meaning. We will talk about what behavior is trying to tell us. You will learn easy strategies like using visual schedules, timers, social stories and wait mats to help children feel safe and understand what is happening next.

  • Supporting All Learners

    • Some children learn and grow in different ways, including children with autism, ADHD or developmental delays. We will talk about how to support all children using clear routines, emotional language and flexible strategies.

  • When You Feel Alone or Need More Help

    • Sometimes it feels like you do not have enough support from families. Sometimes you need to train an assistant or substitute. This topic will help you build simple systems and clear plans so everyone can stay consistent and children feel secure.

Who is this for?

Licensed family child care educators, assistants and substitutes who want practical tools to better understand children's emotions, respond to behaviors with confidence and create supportive and inclusive environments for all learners.

Professional Development Hours: 1 hour for each session, 4 hours total
