Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Train-the-Trainer?

The TTT will prepare you to teach the All Our Kin Family Child Care Business Series to family child care educators in your community. All Our Kin Mentor Coaches will present sections of the Business Series to model the activities and teach the content. They will pause and reflect often, pulling back the curtain to share all the tips and best practices that they know. The TTT is designed to be engaging and fun, and is flexible to meet the needs of all participants. Participants should be prepared to fully engage using a computer, rather than a phone or tablet.

What is the Business Series?

All Our Kin has developed our business curriculum over the past decade, incorporating input provided directly from family child care educators** about the business topics most important to them. The Business Series is a 10-part, educator-facing series that covers marketing, contracts and policies, risk management, accounting and recordkeeping, the Time-Space Percentage, budgeting, savings, and more (see course outline HERE). The course is full of activities and features team-based learning in order to build supportive relationships between participants. We have chosen simple technologies and embedded technology training throughout the series so that participants of all levels will leave more comfortable with virtual learning than they came in with. The series will offer 34 hours of professional development.

**Including licensed family child care educators as well as their staff and applicants in the licensing process.

What is the duration of Train-the-Trainer?

The TTT is a five-day (Monday-Friday) training hosted on Zoom that starts at 11:30 AM ET and ends at 5:00 PM ET. There is a one hour lunch break in the middle of the day along with other small breaks in between. Participants are asked to commit their week to this engagement for full value and requirements of completion.

What support will trainers receive as they implement the Business Series?

When participants go on to teach the Business Series in their home communities, they will receive guidance and support from All Our Kin, as well as opportunities to connect with a national community of Business Series trainers. We provide a semi-annual newsletter, monthly connection time, and a quarterly community of learners facilitated in either English or Spanish.

Who should apply for Train-the-Trainer?

The TTT is best suited for groups of two or more trainers or coaches at organizations that have direct contact with family child care educators. This may include staffed family child care networks, provider associations, Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies, nonprofit organizations, or child care unions. Participants should have a passion for supporting family child care educators, a commitment to equity & inclusion for all caregivers, and dedicated work time and resources to implement the Business Series after completion of the TTT.  Extensive business knowledge is not necessary or required, though comfort with basic math is needed.

Participants should also be familiar with technology, such as Zoom and Google Suite. We are especially seeking bilingual applicants who can offer the Business Series in Spanish and Chinese in their home communities.

What resources are required to implement the Business Series?

Delivering each Business Series will require an approximate budget of $75 per family child care educator for materials, and sufficient staff time (~10 hours per week) for one to two trainers per class for at least twelve consecutive weeks. We encourage you to budget for technology needs, such as access to pro-level Zoom for trainers, and loaner laptops or hotspots if needed for participating educators. Delivering the Business Series requires logistical coordination such as registration, ordering and shipping materials, etc., administrative support may be an additional benefit. There are additional logistical needs if the Business Series is offered in-person.

What does the TTT cost cover?

The cost per participant covers:

  • Five days of virtual training
  • A hard copy of the training manual and other resources
  • Certification to lead the AOK Business Series and access to the curriculum
  • Implementation support from All Our Kin
  • Access to a professional learning network of certified trainers around the country

We recommend teams from a state or organization apply to the TTT.

Note that delivering the Business Series requires additional funding, primarily for staff time and student materials (See: What resources are required to implement the Virtual Business Series?).

Can my organization teach the Business Series as an in-person class? Are there other languages?

All Our Kin Business Series curriculum is now provided to you with an in-person and virtual instructor guide so you’re able to facilitate it in whichever format best suits your educators needs.  Both in-person and virtual Business Series are designed to be interactive and low tech experience needed for both trainers and students. Each version is also available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

How do we find funding?

All Our Kin has developed a guide that you can use to seek funding to attend the Train-the-Trainer and deliver the Business Series in your community. Please click here to download an editable Word document. If you have questions regarding funding, please contact us at technicalassistance@allourkin.org

If my organization has already participated in the TTT and we want to send new participants, do we need to meet with AOK coaches again?

We ask that you submit an application (one per organization). We would still like to meet with all new trainers to connect, review commitments, and answer questions for our new participants.

What is the TTT application and selection timeline?

We will notify you when applications open ahead of time. One application should be completed per organization. Each application includes a 45-minute conversation with All Our Kin for us to learn about your vision for the Business Series in your community and answer any questions you or your participants may have for us.

After these conversations, we notify participants of their acceptance via email. At that time, we ask you to confirm your attendance within one week. Further timelines are provided after your acceptance into the TTT.

What is the commitment if I'm accepted?

We ask that you commit to participating in the TTT in its entirety and delivering a pilot Business Series in your community within 12 months of the TTT. During this period, we ask that you share feedback and evaluative data with All Our Kin. You are welcome to repeat the Series in your community as many times as you'd like on your own schedule after the pilot.

If accepted, we will ask you to sign a Memorandum of Understanding or Service Agreement. The principle commitments are:

  • The Business Series must be offered free of charge to family or group, home-based, child care educators, not center directors or other business owners.
  • The Business Series must be offered as a series, as originally designed, not separated into individual topic areas.
  • Individuals teaching the Business Series must be trained by All Our Kin directly.
  • All Our Kin copyright notices must remain on all written materials.
